How to Care for Your Marcella Fine Rug

I. Vacuuming

Your Marcella rug can be vacuumed safely using a standard household vacuum cleaner. However, do not vacuum your rug excessively. Vacuum only as necessary, depending on the use of the rug. A rug in a high traffic area should be vacuumed about once every seven to ten days. In a low traffic area, once every two to four weeks will suffice.

Be careful not to get the fringe caught in the vacuum, since this can pull and warp threads causing damage. Vacuum across the rug at the fringed ends.

Generally, dust and dirt settle to the base of the pile. Vacuuming the back side of the rug once every six months or so is strongly recommended.

II. Wash

An oriental rug does not need to be washed frequently, as a rule. Wash only as necessary when the rug is soiled. However do not delay in having the rug washed when it is in obvious need of cleaning. Soil and grit settle to the base of the pile, and the "sanding" action caused by friction is harmful to the wool yarn. Have your rug washed only by a reputable firm which specializes in the washing of hand knotted, hand tufted, and machine made rugs; unsuitable washing procedures may deter from the integrity of your rug.

Do not use dry cleaning materials or chemicals on your rug. If in doubt, contact us for advice.

III. Spills

The majority of spills, if attended to promptly and not allowed to penetrate the pile of the rug or dry, will not permanently stain your rug. In case of spillage, use a spoon to thoroughly scoop up the spilt substance or liquid. Add cold water, or if available, club soda, to the spill area and proceed to scoop it. Club soda is advised because the effervescent action helps any penetrated spill to the surface. Repeat this process until the water being scooped is as clear as the water being added to the area of the spill. If necessary, a mild soap solution, such as Woolite®, may be used. However, make sure this is thoroughly rinsed out of the rug with clear water. Do not use harsh detergents, bleach or other chemicals. Blot the wet area using a towel, brush the nap to its natural angle, and raise the wet area off the floor, allowing air to circulate under the rug, insuring rapid evaporation. Brush the pile, after the area is dry, to restore the natural patina.

IV. General Care

Prevent your rug from getting wet. If this occurs, dry the wet area using a towel (do not rub). Raise the wet area off the floor, allowing air to circulate under the rug. Excessive humidity and moisture can cause mildew, which is extremely harmful to your rug. At the first sign of mildew, have your rug tended to by an expert. Use of the correct type of padding helps prevent mildew.

Prevent your rug from pet abuse. Pet stains will cause permanent discoloration of the rug. In case of a pet-related accident, tend to the rug at once, following the steps recommended for spillage.

Rotate your rug every six months to ensure even exposure to traffic patterns, sunlight, and usage.

As a matter of habit, inspect both sides of your rug once or twice a year. Tend to any potential problems or needs for repair immediately.

We are available freely for consultation on all matters of care, protection, wash and repair. Do not hesitate to contact us with rug care inquiries.
